Understanding Zika & Lyme Disease: Symptoms, Risks, and Long-Term Effects
Zika Virus is Often mild, with fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis. However, it can cause birth defects (e.g., microcephaly) if a pregnant woman is infected.
Lyme disease: Caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium and transmitted through the bite of infected black-legged ticks (deer ticks), can lead to various health problems if not diagnosed and treated early. The disease progresses through different stages, each with its own set of complications:
Early Symptoms (Days to Weeks After a Tick Bite)
Erythema migraine: is a distinctive skin rash that is an early sign of Lyme disease, caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria and transmitted by infected black-legged (deer) ticks. It appears at the site of the tick bite, typically 3 to 30 days after infection.
Flu-like symptoms: Fever, chills, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes.
Early Disseminated Stage (Weeks to Months After Infection)
If untreated, the bacteria can spread through the bloodstream, leading to:
- Joint pain and swelling, especially in large joints like the knees.
- Neurological issues- Facial paralysis (Bell's Palsy), numbness, tingling, or weakness in limbs.
- Heart problems Lyme carditis, which can cause an irregular heartbeat (palpitations, dizziness, fainting).
Late-Stage Lyme Disease (Months to Years Later):
- Chronic arthritis Persistent joint inflammation and pain, mainly in the knees.
- Neurological complications Memory problems, difficulty concentrating (Lyme brain fog), nerve pain, or meningitis.
